Concept of Audio
The DV camera recorder has build-in microphones, which is Omnidirectional Microphones. Remember not to use this kind of microphone to record actor's voice because it will record the sound from environment. The "Shotgun" microphone is highly recommended and it is commonly used on television and film sets, in stadiums, and for field recording of wildlife.
Type of Microphones
Dynamic Microphones
Dynamic microphones are versatile and ideal for general-purpose use. They are relatively sturdy and resilient to rough handling. They are also better suited to handle high volume levels, such as from certain musical instruments or amplifiers. They have no internal amplifier and do not require batteries or external power.
Condenser Microphones
Condenser microphones require power from a battery or external source. The resulting audio signal is stronger signal than that from a dynamic. Condensers also tend to be more sensitive and responsive than dynamics, making them well-suited to capturing subtle nuances in a sound.
Type of Microphones direction
Omnidirectional
Pick up sound evenly from all directions, omni means "all" or "every". |
 |
Unidirectional
Pick up sound predominantly from one direction. This includes cardioid and hypercardioid microphones. |
 |
Bidirectional
Picks up sound from two opposite directions. |

Shotgun Microphones
"Shotgun" microphones are the most highly directional. They have small lobes of sensitivity to the left, right, and rear but are significantly less sensitive to the side and rear than other directional microphones are. This results from placing the element at the end of a tube with slots cut along the side; wave cancellation eliminates much of the off-axis sound. Due to the narrowness of their sensitivity area, shotgun microphones are commonly used on television and film sets, in stadiums, and for field recording of wildlife.
Windshield
Its function is to reduce the noise of wind blowing in outdoor environment.
Boom
The boom is very popular in film production. A directional microphone is mounted on a boom arm and positioned just out of camera frame, as shown on the right. The cable is wrapped once or twice around the boom arm.
Volume control and 1 kHz Tone
1 kHz Tone is the best recording level for audio recording. Don’t turn higher or lower than this level. You must monitor audio keep in 1 khz tone by volume control in your DV recorder, or mixer for not volume control DV recorder.
Sample: 1 khz tone
