Concept of Casting
After you have finished the storyboard, you have to research and choose a suitable location, props and actors for your movie:

Location

It tells the times and place in a movie. It is very important in opening and from one scene to other scene. How to choose a location suitable for indie DV film?

  • Try to find a real location. If the location is inaccessible, Blue screen (Blue Screen will teach in Tutorial 9) and composing in Post-production will be alternative.
  • Try to find a location free of charge.
  • Consider a place where can be used for a long period, e.g. your home or a park.
  • Use “mini model or huge poster" and match Camera skill also can make a virtual location

For example: Reservoir Dogs (1992), this movie just required 2-3 locations, another example: Starwar IV (1977) made use of "mini model or huge poster" along with camera skill to combine screen and this skill is still used in Hollywood film.

Props
It is a supporting role in movie and also can represent a meaning such as car. For example, a man who drives an old car who is likes a poor man, when a man drives a Benz who is a rich man.

  • Try to find real props. If the prop is not available such as a tank, shot in Blue screen (Blue Screen will teach in Tutorial 9) or retouch in Post-production can be used.
  • Try to find free props or buy second hand props and renew it.
  • If possible, try to use existing props in your location such as furniture.

Actor
Actors take the key role in a movie, however, indie movie has low budget only. It is impossible for you to employ a famous actor. How should you select a actor(s) who can fit your budget? Following are some tips:
  • Try to find the actor who has something in common with the role in his real life such as a policeman
  • Try to find drama school students or film school students
  • Try to notice in Facebook who are interested in playing the roles in your script.
  • Try to find your friends, family or yourself

For example: Made in Hong Kong (1997), Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Costume and make up are also important for actors, however, general indie movie no budget to employ costume designer and make up artist for actors. Therefore, you have to advise your actors what type of clothes to be worn; you also need to prepare clothes for your actors in case of some special clothes are required for the film, such as those having blood or dirty stains.

In short, you need to organize different locations, props and actors in order to ensure the smooth proceeding of the production. If any one is missing, then you can’t start your movie. So check list is an important tool to help you organize the details well.

Now, You can try to write and oragnize your casting, location, and props in the forms below:
